Neil Turner fell in love with reading as a boy when he read books by authors like Beatrix Potter and Thornton Burgess. His parents were happy to listen to him reading them stories. Then he started writing, but it is only as an adult that he considered writing a book. After many courses, seminars, conferences, and failed manuscripts, he succeeded with the Tony Valenti Thriller Series.

Plane in the Lake is book two in the series, following on A House on Liberty Street. Neil is planning to add another two books to this series by the end of 2021, with more to come. Join his exclusive Reader’s Club to get the free prequel to the series.

A Cessna 210N crashes into Lake Michigan. An assassination attempt on Fransesco Valenti. A visit by a mobster enforcer. And in the middle of it all is Tony Valenti, a partner in Brooks and Valenti’s law firm.

Can he protect Billy Likens’ company, R & B Ramp Services, from a lawsuit and criminal investigation relating to the Windy City Sky Tours Cessna crash? At the same time, he also needs to protect his father and find out who tried to kill him. And on top of everything, he has to deal with Joe, a Mafia henchman, send to threaten Tony. He wants him to give up his father’s location and make sure that R & B Ramp Services are found guilty of causing the plane crash. Otherwise, there will be dire consequences.

What did I love?

The author uses dialogue to portray Tony and his family’s Italian heritage. I like how the author shows the theme of loyalty throughout the book. Not only the dedication of the old veterans towards Fransesco, still determined to protect him even after one of them got shot. But also Tony’s loyalty towards Billy, trying to defend him even if it put his own family in danger.

The author writes mainly from the point of view of Tony Valenti. It is also how the author shows the ongoing battle in his mind between his loyalty towards a friend and his desire to keep his family safe. This desire leads him to make foolish decisions, increasing his frustration with his ability to keep his family safe.

And not so much?

As much as I like Tony Valenti, some of his decisions strike me as rather foolish. Although he doesn’t mention Joe’s visit to detective Jake Plummer, I would think he would at least keep the glass Joe used for possible fingerprints, should he decide to trust Jake with it in the future.

Should you read it?

Plane in the Lake is a complex novel with various angles. The use of different storylines keeps the readers guessing about how it all connects. We find it easy to associate with Tony and his inner battles: how can he protect his family and still do what is right?

I recommend Plane in a Lake to readers who like legal and organized crime thrillers. Similar books you might enjoy are the conspiracy thriller The Cure by KJ Kalis and the political thriller Blood Dragon by Freddie P Peters.
